Barry
Singleton
Barry Singleton was born
in Ballarat, Victoria on the 1st October 1938. His formal art
training centred on sculpture and painting, and finally ceramics.
In 1970 he established his studio in the bushland of Castlemaine,
a place from which he draws much inspiration. He eagerly accepted
an opportunity to work with a master potter in Japan in 1976,
where he studied and lived with Yasu Ogawara at Hashima Kiln
in Kurashiki. Barry enjoyed a teaching career, which included
lecturing in Japan and China, but in 1993 he retired to commit
himself full-time to refining the form and glazes of his pots.
His work is not simply decorative, Barry wants us to use his
work, it is important that it be functional. Driven by his concern
for simple form and quiet beauty he is a master of both stoneware
and porcelain. You will find Barry’s work represented in
the art galleries of Bendigo, Castlemaine, Shepparton and Sale;
the Victorian Ceramics Group Collection; the Myer Bicentennial
Collection; and private collections in Australia and overseas.
